Sample Collection Tips with GIFs
Using an at-home finger prick blood test is simple, but in your excitement to find out your baby’s sex, it’s easy to miss a step or two.
We’ve put together a list of some critical steps and helpful tips to accompany (not replace!) our instructional video and written instructions which will guide you through the sample collection process.
Before you begin…
If you need assistance, make sure you find a female helper as male DNA can contaminate your sample.
1. Remove All Jewelry
Remove all jewelry/accessories on your fingers and wrists.
2. Clean Nails
Clean undernbeath your fingernails (we recommend using a nail brush).
3. Clench Your Fist
Clench and unclench your fist on your non-dominant hand for about 30 seconds to promote blood flow.
4. Clean Your Finger
Make sure you clean underneath your fingernail with the alcohol wipe.
5. Prick Your Finger
You want to prick the side (not the center or tip) of your finger pad, towards your pinky. Don’t get too close to the nail or the blood will pool underneath.
6. Massage Your Finger
Hold your hand downwards as you massage your finger with your other hand to get the blood flowing to the tip. 6 big drops of blood should be enough to get to the 250ul fill line.
7. Scrape Blood Into Tube
Having trouble getting blood into the tube? Use the raised edge of the tube to ‘scrape’ your blood in.
8. Cap Tube
Once filled, replace the lid and press down firmly until you hear a click.
9. Invert Tube
Make sure you invert the tube to mix the sample, the blood should flow freely.
10. Tap Tube
Blood not flowing freely? Give it a couple taps on a hard surface and continue inverting the tube.
