Linea Nigra: What's A Pregnancy Line?
Linea Nigra is a common symptom of pregnancy – and yet not many people are aware of its existence. But what is Linea Nigra? Why does it appear, when does it fade, and what can you do about it? Here’s your guide to the pregnancy line!
What’s a pregnancy line?
Linea Nigra, often called the pregnancy line, runs directly from your belly and can extend down to your abdomen. Literally meaning “black line” in Latin, a linea nigra can be an unexpected guest along your pregnancy journey, but it’s nothing to fear or to be worried about! In this blog, we’ll cover exactly what you need to know about this pregnancy addition, what are the causes, and when you can expect it to fade away!
Why does linea nigra appear?
Now, you probably wondering why on earth does this line show up during pregnancy? Well, the answer lies in our best friend- hormones. As you probably know, during pregnancy, our bodies go through a lot of hormonal changes. One of these changes involves an increased production of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its color. The increase in melanin production can cause darkening of the skin, including the appearance of linea nigra. So, believe it or not, you’ve always had this line, but it wasn’t quite visible until your pregnancy!
When does a linea nigra appear?
Typically, if you were to have a visible pregnancy line, it’ll appear during the second trimester of your pregnancy (around 20 weeks) and can become more prominent as the pregnancy progresses. It's typically more common in women with darker skin tones, but anyone can develop it!
Is a linea nigra harmful?
Nope! The appearance or presence of a linea nigra during pregnancy is completely harmless and shouldn’t be something to be alarmed or worried about. This is just a part of the magical and beautiful journey of your pregnancy.
Can I make my linea nigra go away?
Unfortunately, there’s not exactly a way to make a linea nigra go away or prevent it from appearing. The good news is that Linea nigra is usually temporary and will fade after your pregnancy. However, in some cases, it may take several months or even a year to completely disappear!
If you’re feeling a bit self-conscious about your pregnancy line (which you shouldn’t be!), there are some things you can do to reduce its appearance. For example, avoiding excessive sun exposure can help prevent darkening of the skin, including the appearance of linea nigra. Using a brightening cream or serum that contains vitamin C or niacinamide may help reduce the appearance of linea nigra. But remember, it's always best to check with your healthcare provider before using any products while pregnant or breastfeeding.
Now, we know that seeing a dark line on your belly or breasts can be a bit disconcerting at first. But here's the thing- linea nigra is a sign of the beautiful and miraculous journey that your body is going through. It's a reminder of the life growing inside of you and the amazing things that your body is capable of. So, flaunt that line proudly and let it serve as a badge of honor!
